Test format

There is no single national exam: you take the assessment built into whichever approved course you choose. Most courses run about 60–90 minutes of self-paced training followed by roughly 40 multiple-choice questions, with a pass mark between 70% and 80% depending on the provider — and most allow retakes if you fall short. In most states approval means the course is accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB), though some states and counties also license their own programs.

Where a card is required, the clock starts when you start work: 30 days is the most common window — California, Texas, Oregon, Illinois, and New Mexico all use it — while Washington requires the card within 14 days and Florida allows 60.
